Sonia Lo

Chief Executive Officer

Education: Stanford AB, Harvard MBA

 Career Highlights:

  • Founder and Managing Partner of Chalsys LLP, an advisory and direct investment company focusing on business building, restructuring and asset management. Chalsys has made investments in impact venture funds, industrial lighting, natural cosmetics, and “digital” agriculture
  • Angel investor in over 15 international companies, with 4 exits
  • Served on three UK PLC boards and eight private company boards as non-executive director
  • She is an experienced operating executive, including having been the Director of Global Content for Google, Inc
  • Co-founder and CEO of eZoka Group. Sonia was appointed as one of the top Global 100 Technology Pioneers at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 2000 and 2001 and
    she has also been named one of Management Today's leading 35 businesswomen in
    the UK under 35
  • Speaks 7 languages and has lived and worked in 16 countries
  • Holds a third-degree blackbelt in Tae-Kwon Do
  • Was a professional private chef in London for two years
  • Certified in Green Supply Chain Management and Zero Energy Architecture

When not growing lettuce? 

Cooking for and feeding her friends and family who act as willing guinea pigs for her recipes.

Dr. Deane Falcone

Chief Scientific Officer

Education: UT Austin BA, MA, Ohio State PhD, Stanford Postdoctoral

 Career Highlights:

  • Previously Chief Molecular Science Officer and Founder, Naprogenix, Inc, a biotechnology company.  Developed platform to access the chemical diversity of plants
  • Served as Faculty and Principal Investigator at the University of MA with a research focus on plant stress and metabolism
  • Conducted plant cell research as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Plant Breeding Research, Max Planck Institute, Cologne, Germany
  • Developed a growth-performance based screen to identify genes to improve plant growth and stress resistance
  • Identified and isolated plant genes that confer stress tolerance and yield increases in plants
  • Conducted research in several areas of plant metabolism: photosynthesis, carbon dioxide fixation, plant fatty acids/oils, plant biochemical diversity, including health-promoting plant compounds
  • Published over 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles in the above areas and is an inventor on 4 issued patents

When not growing lettuce? 

Convincing others that plants can serve as the basis of solutions to a wide range of major global problems.

Steve Montoya

SVP Advanced Technology

Education: UC Davis BSEE, UC Berkeley MSEE, Pepperdine MBA

 Career Highlights:

  • Over 30 years of experience in technology development 
  • Directed launching 3 start-up companies, including StrataCom acquired for over $4B by Cisco Systems
  • At Cisco he led as Director of Engineering for Internet Appliance & Applications Business Unit
  • Steve then co-founded Nayna Networks Corporation as Vice-President of Engineering/Operations, built and managed the hardware, software, systems engineering and operations. He raised $55M in Series A/B rounds
  • He was most recently VP of product management, R&D and operations building energy efficient lighting at HID Laboratories and Topanga Technologies

When not growing lettuce? 

Rooting for his son’s CA-based Ice-Hockey team (go figure!?)

Dave Vosburg

CFO & VP Strategy

Education: Notre Dame BA, Yale MBA

 Career Highlights:

  • Launched the first fully electronic version of any curriculum as CCO of ED-Tech start-up, with over 5,000 flash-animated lessons in seven languages
  • Co-Founded an HR-outsourcing firm and a serviced offices company in Lusaka, Zambia; drove company to profitability in two years (currently in sale discussions)
  • Acted as CFO for Zoona, Zambia and Malawi’s largest money transfer company taking it through its first audit with a big-four and managing financial projections for $4m equity injection
  • Voted as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia where he worked with Government leaders to increase US – Zambia trade

When not growing lettuce? 

Taking orders from his two-year-old daughter.

Tom Kerr

Director of Software and Analytics

Education: Emerson College

 Career Highlights:

  • Contributed to the Internet Archive’s mass-digitization effort at the Boston Public Library, managing meta-data and photographing books, manuscripts, maps, and special collections such as John Adams’ personal library, as well as providing their 20+ scanning centers in the Americas, Europe, and Asia with technical support and a computer-vision-assisted editing & annotation tool.
  • Learned to grow, maintain, and harvest dozens of crops on a local organic farm, including over 40 types of garlic and heirloom tomatoes.
  • Joined FreshBox Farms as the first Harvest Manager of their first facility, overseeing the initial months of production.
  • As a Developer & Systems Analyst built an integrated farm management system, including production dashboards, analytics, and SCADA/IoT infrastructure.

When not growing lettuce? 

Cycling and obsessing about the music of J.S. Bach.

Randy Frederick

Randy Frederick

Director of Sales and Business Development

Education: Bachelors at University Wisconsin, Madison.

Career Highlights:

  • Served as Vice President of National Sales for Freight Farms, responsible for account development in the grocery, restaurant and wholesale produce channels.
  • Worked as the Vice President of National Account Sales at SteadyServ Technologies, which focused inventory, order management and business intelligence systems to serve the needs of the beer industry.
  • Directed the sales team at one of the top up-fitters of municipal vehicles in the United States.
  • Worked various sales and marketing positions with MillerCoors.

Lydia Conley

Director of Plant Research Production

Education: Salve Regina University, BS Biology

 Career Highlights:

  • Researched environmental impacts of runoff water into local beaches to determine causes of frequent algal blooms. Performed water quality tests monitoring for mineral nutrients, pollutants and bacterial contamination.
  • Participated in “Clean Ocean Access” to examine estuaries surrounding local beaches. Analyzed water samples for contaminates that may have a potential impact on humans and wildlife.
  •  Conducted independent plant development research as a member of the “Plant Growth and Research Management Team” for one of the world’s largest Plant Biotechnology companies for over four years.
  • Taught Special Education, General Science, Chemistry and Physical Science in a Title One school for 3 years. Maintained a greenhouse to provide hands-on projects designed to teach students the fundamentals of plant biology.
  • Served as a SMILE program mentor. Advised students in a stem-focused afterschool enrichment program designed to expose disadvantaged students to content in science, math and engineering.
  • Worked with Habitat for Humanity on the “Rebuilding New Orleans Project”. Assisted with a broad range of activities to clean and rebuild homes and remediate contaminated soils by planting crops.
  • Worked as a Community Garden Student Advisor over the course of several summers. Organized and oversaw students as they maintained the garden. Taught them the importance of healthy eating, preserving the environment and community building.

When not growing lettuce? 

Spending time with loved ones. Enjoying the outdoors, especially the beach.

Carld Auguste

Director of Construction and Project Management

Education: Fitchburg State University BS Industrial Technology, Curry College MBA

 Career Highlights:

  • Worked for Eversource Energy in Massachusetts; managed Direct Install and Municipal Programs.
  • LEED Accredited Professional
  • 12+ years of extensive experience in construction that include energy efficiency, build to suit and tenant fit-up.
  • Team member of AEE 2014 Best Public Facilities Energy Project In New England- Federal Reserve Bank of Boston
  • PMI Massachusetts Member

When not growing lettuce? 

When I am not growing Lettuce I am trying to keep up with my 3 kids and shuttling them around to their activities.
